How to change tick speed in Minecraft?

A tick is the cycle of a gameplay (loops) and it is automatically set to 20 ticks/second in Minecraft. This is also described as TPS (ticks per second). This game tick is not changeable. The Random Tick however is changeable.

Here’s what you should know about tick speed:

  • Game Tick is 20 TPS (Ticks per second): not changeable
  • Random Tick (growth/death/propagation etc.): changeable
  • Command: /gamerule randomTickSpeed
  • Caution: Danger to make the game unplayable

Change Random Tick

The random tick influences e.g. the growth/death of plants or the fire spread. In the Java Edition it is set to 3 by default. It can be changed, but it should be noted that changing the tick speed can have serious consequences for the game. Changing the tick speed is also related to the capabilities of the PC. For example, if the tick speed is changed too much, the game will lag.

The command to change is as follows:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed 100

 Why change the tick?

The reason to change the random tick is mostly to achieve faster growth of plants and resources. Also faster fire spreading, ice melting and e.g. progressive oxidation of copper blocks are often reasons for a faster tick speed.

The danger is, if you set too many ticks, a fire can spread uncontrolled and destroy your own buildings etc. and with an extremely high tick count the game becomes “unplayable”.

Random ticks can also be switched off completely by simply setting a 0 instead of the default setting of 3. However, this only applies to the Java version, in the Bedrock version the default is already 1.

In the Minecraft community, we hear about the notion that changing the random tick is a kind of “cheating” to deliberately speed up the cultivation of plants, crops and trees unnaturally, for example. Ultimately, it is up to each Minecraft player how much they want to change the game.
