Minecraft Trident

What do Aquaman, Poseidon and the Devil have in common? They’re rocking a cool trident, of course! If you want to feel like the coolest fisherman ever too, look no further than this article. Here, you will learn everything about this oversized fork, from getting it to what you can do once you have it!

How to get a Trident in Minecraft

Normally, a weapon like the trident can be simply crafted by combining a few materials. The trident wants to be something special, however, so you cannot actually craft it. Instead, you have to grind a certain type of mob: The drowned. Drowned are created either by spawning naturally in certain biomes or by throwing a zombie into water.

If you still want a trident, you should get a sword or a bow and arrow, because you will have to hunt a lot of drowned. Only 6.25% of all drowned even have a trident, and only 8.5% of these will drop their weapon when killed. This means that out of 200 drowned, only one will drop a trident. And if they throw it at you, you can’t pick it up, so don’t try that. On a positive note, drowned also drop copper, so you can at least fill your supply of precious metals.

What to do with an MC Trident

Once you got your trident, likely after killing a lot of drowned, you might wonder what you can do with it. Of course, you can use it in a fight, both in melee and in ranged combat. But there is more to the trident than just stabbing and throwing. Its true power unfolds when combining it with the trident enchantments the game offers. Before we get to those, you should know some of the damage values this unique weapon offers.

The Damage a Trident can do

Even before trident enchantments, the weapon deals pretty good damage. In melee, the trident does 4,5 damage, making it even deadlier than a netherite sword. At 250 durability, the trident is comparable to the iron sword, but with a lot more damage.

When you throw a trident, it behaves much like an arrow, but it doesn’t slow down when going through water or lava. A thrown trident does 4 damage, which is still pretty strong. It despawns after 60 seconds if you don’t pick it up.

The Minecraft Trident Enchantments

The best trident enchantments are definitely the ones exclusive to the weapon. These are:

  • Riptide
  • Loyalty
  • Channeling
  • Impaling

Unlike most weapons, the trident has these 4 different enchantments that cannot be used on other weapons. Let’s take a deeper look into each of these.

The Minecraft Riptide Enchantment

One of the most useful enchantments is called riptide. Minecraft has some really powerful enchantments to offer, but this one can catapult you into new heights. When you throw a trident enchanted with riptide, you get launched with it. Although you can only throw it while wet, like in rain, in water or while in a snow storm. The trident does damage as normal and allows you to travel both quickly and in style. Note that riptide cannot be used on the same trident as loyalty and channeling.

Other Unique Enchantments

Since riptide is incompatible with two of the other exclusive enchantments, you can either make one trident with riptide or one with the other enchantments, the choice is yours. The enchantment loyalty makes the trident return to the player when thrown. That is also why it’s incompatible with riptide, since that enchantment makes the trident never leave your hand.

When it comes to channeling, Minecraft also prevents you from combining it with riptide. When a trident with channeling is thrown and hits a mob during a thunderstorm, the target also gets hit by a lighting bolt. Not only can you use this feature to damage mobs, you can also use it to turn some mobs into different versions. Once hit by a lighting bolt, these things happen:

  • creepers become charged creepers
  • villagers turn into witches
  • pigs turn into zombified piglins
  • mooshrooms can be affected and change their colors.

When combined with a lightning rod, you can even create lightning bolts outside of a thunderstorm!

The final exclusive enchantment for the trident in Minecraft, impaling, is not as flashy as the others, but very useful overall. Unlike channeling and loyalty, impaling is compatible with riptide and offers a fairly good damage boost. Impaling increases the trident’s damage against aquatic creatures, adding 1.25 damage with each level, up to a bonus of 6.25 damage.

Other Enchantments

Not all trident enchantments are unique, though. Generally useful ones such as unbreaking, mending and even ones that aren’t useful, the curse of vanishing in particular, can be put on the trident. All of them are compatible with either riptide or loyalty and channeling, so feel free to experiment with them.

Repairing your Trident

Once you’re done hunting with your trident, you may want to repair it. After all, obtaining it was a hassle to be sure, so you would want to keep it working as long as possible. You have a few options for a trident repair. You can combine two damaged tridents on a crafting table or on a grindstone, for instance. However, you will lose any enchantment on the trident, except the curse of vanishing

If you want to keep the enchantments, look no further than an anvil. Here, you can combine two damaged tridents while keeping the enchantments. The mending enchantment also helps you keep the trident intact.

Minecraft Trident fun facts

Not only is a Minecraft trident insanely rare and holds great power, but it also comes with some funny side effects. You might not have noticed them in the game yet, so here are some of the lesser known things a Minecraft trident can do:

  • In Bedrock Edition, if you don’t want to get in trouble with the watery undead, you can simply toss a nautilus shell to the drowned, which can make them drop a fully durable trident!
  • If a villager dies by a trident thrown by a drowned, it has a chance to become a zombie villager
  • Even though skeleton horses sometimes spawn when lightning strikes, the lighting caused by channeling doesn’t spawn them.
  • In Bedrock Edition, impaling increases the damage done to all mobs in water, not only aquatic mobs.

Conclusion on the Minecraft Trident

Even if it’s pretty hard to get, the trident more than makes up for it, both in damage and in utility. Especially the unique enchantments make exploring with the trident insanely fun. You benefit from extended reach, traveling with riptide, throwing it and lighting bolt summoning with loyalty and channeling. If you ever wanted to be a more aquatic-themed Thor, now is your chance! To use all of these features, you should check out a Minecraft server from G-Portal. Take up your trident and explore the world!
