When you first begin the game, you are usually completely dependent on finding resources in the wild, but farming in Minecraft can provide you with a steady supply of vital resources. For one, farming can provide a simple and consistent source of food, which is vital for survival. You can also obtain crafting materials, large amounts of furnace fuel, materials for brewing potions, and materials for creating dyes. Farms can also be used for decoration!

Farming in Minecraft can both be very simple and complicated depending on the kind of crop you intend to grow and the method you choose to use. Due to this, we have split up this article into multiple sections to make it as easy as possible for you to get the information needed.

Farm Lands

Before heading into the specifics about certain crops it’s crucial to know about farmlands as you cannot grow many crops without them! Farmlands are created by using a hoe on grass or dirt blocks, but be warned they will quickly turn back to dirt blocks should they not be hydrated. To hydrate farmlands they simply need to be within a 4-block range of water that is on the same height as the farmland.

One of the easiest ways to improve your crop growth is to ensure your crops are surrounded by hydrated farmlands. An easy rule of thumb is to not plant your crops on any farmlands that are not surrounded by at least 6 other hydrated farmlands as they will grow slower.

If that is still not fast enough then this obscure tip will help you with your crop yield even more! Make sure that you do not plant the same crop in rows next to each other as that will slow down their growth. You can either not plant anything in the rows between or plant another crop in its place.

Seeded Food Source Crops

The most simple crops to grow to get your Minecraft diet going are wheat and beetroot! These can be planted on moist farmland and when harvested will provide both their respective crops and seeds making them easy to replant.

Wheat

Wheat seeds can be obtained from multiple sources however, the simplest way to get them is just to break some grass until you obtain some wheat seeds. Once they are obtained simply plant them by right-clicking with them on farmland and wait for them to grow!

Wheat can be used for food like bread, cake, and cookies. It can also be used to create some nice decorative blocks like hay bales and packed mud! Last but not least, wheat plays an important role in breeding cows, sheep, goats, and mooshrooms which can be vital to any late-game Minecraft world. All of these amazing uses make wheat one of the most vital Minecraft crops!

Beetroot

Beetroot seeds are sadly quite hard to come across as they can only be obtained by finding a village with them growing and then harvesting them. However, once they are obtained it’s as simple as planting beetroot seeds on farmland and waiting for them to grow.

Beetroots can be used to satiate hunger by either being eaten raw or crafted into the much more filling Beetroot Soup. They can also be turned into red dye by simply throwing one into a crafting table! While beetroots have significantly fewer uses compared to wheat seeds they can still be a very useful crop to have.

Seedless Food Source Crops

Should you not enjoy the tedium of having to manage your seeds and crops separately Potatoes and Carrots may be what you’re looking for! These crops are both wonderful food sources and instead of requiring seeds to be planted, all you need to do is the harvested crop on a farmland.

Potatoes

Potatoes can be most commonly found by locating a Village and pillaging their fields or they can also be a rare drop from Zombies. While their uses are limited to only being cooked into a Baked Potato they’re still incredibly useful due to their simplicity and yield when harvesting.

Carrots

Carrots are easiest to get by finding a Village and harvesting their fields or they can also be obtained as a rare drop from Zombies. While carrots provide a little less nourishment than other foods one of their biggest benefits is that you do not need to cook this food to eat it and not suffer effects. They can also be used to craft Golden Carrots, Carrot on a Stick, and Rabbit Stew.

Simple to grow resources

Many crops in the game are not meant to be used as a food source but instead are used to decorate, fuel furnaces, utility, and brew potions!

Kelp

Kelp can be found by exploring your world’s oceans and harvesting by simply hitting them with whatever you like, and they can be planted by simply using them on Sand or Dirt that is underwater!

Their primary use is to convert flowing water blocks to source blocks by placing one in said flowing water! This allows the player to construct things like bubble columns easily. They can also be cooked into Dried Kelp and used as a light food source that can easily be obtained in bulk. Kelp can also be used to breed sea turtles!

Bamboo

Bamboo can be found scattered around the Bamboo Jungle biomes of your Minecraft world. It is one of Minecraft’s most versatile crops due to its wide variety of super useful features. These include Scaffolding, Bamboo Wood, breeding Pandas, and being an easily sustainable fuel for furnaces!

Vines

Vines can be found scattered around your world in Lush Caves, Jungles, Swamps, and freshly grown Jungle Trees, and can be harvested using Shears. They grow by simply placing them on the side of a block and having them spread over a wall. They can be super useful to anyone looking for a plant aesthetic in their builds as they can be used to climb up and craft Mossy Cobblestone and Mossy Stone Bricks!

Cactus

Cactus can be obtained by locating them in a Desert biome. While the cactus it’s self doesn’t serve much purpose it’s self of than its ability to destroy items thrown at it, it can be turned into Green Dye which can be used to create and dye a plethora of blocks, items, and fireworks!

Nether Wart

Nether Wart can be quite difficult to obtain as the only places it naturally generates are Nether Fortresses and Bastions which are filled with dangerous mobs but the trek is worth it to many due to the benefits this infernal crop can provide. Once you’ve gotten the crop it’s worth noting that the adventure to grow these is not over just yet, you will need to also find some Soul Sand to plant the crop on. However, once your adventure is done growing them is as simple as using Nether Wart on a block of soul sand and waiting for it to fully grow. Their primary purpose is to brew the Awkward Potion which is required to brew most of the potions in the game! However, they also serve a decorative purpose should you wish to use Nether Wart Blocks or Red Nether Bricks for your builds.

Cocoa Beans

Cocoa Beans can be obtained by harvesting Cocoa pods that grow on the side of Jungle Trees in the Jungle Biome. To farm Cocoa Beans it’s as easy as placing them on the side of a Jungle Log and waiting for them to grow! They can used to dye all sorts of blocks and also craft Cookies! Just make sure to not feed the cookie to your pet Parrot.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins can be found in the majority of Overworld Biomes in small clusters. Similar to Melons, to grow Pumpkins you will want to have a single farmland surrounded by normal blocks, after a bit the pumpkin will grow a stem and populate blocks around it with new pumpkins! Pumpkins can be used to craft Pumpkin Pies or more Pumpkin Seeds. However, where pumpkins truly shine is that they can be carved and turned into Carved Pumpkins by using shears on them! Once turned into carved pumpkins they can be used to prevent Enderman from becoming aggressive by wearing it in your head slot, building Snow Golems and Iron Golems to protect your base, or even by used as a lighting source by crafting a Jack o’Lantern! All of these uses lead pumpkins to be a very valuable crop to have on hand.

Melons

Melons can be found in the majority of Overworld Biomes in small clusters. Similar to Pumpkins, to grow Melons you will want to have a single farmland surrounded by normal blocks, after a bit, the melon will grow a stem and populate blocks around it with new melons! Once harvested melons will drop Melon Slices eaten for a small amount of food or crafted into Glistering Melon Slices to brew the ever-useful Potion of Healing or into even more Melon Seeds.
